New Improved Empire Front Cover.

I decided to change my Empire magazine front cover at the last minute as although as said in my evaluation the key images matched well with the horror trailer and each other, the fact that they both contained the same key image worried me as it looked too simular. In order to change this I decided to take a character from the 'BLEAK HILL LANE' trailer and shoot some more photos in order to find a new key image. After looking through the many different photos I decided to use this one as it looked the most horror effective. The colours edited work well with the colours of my Empire layout and the photo also reminded me of other horror posters and front covers I have seen, for example 'Drag me to hell'.

Thoughts on 'The Omen 2006 Teaser Trailer'

This trailer  is effective as it has hardly anything in it, yet its simplicity tells the audience enough to want to go see it. The eery music in the background as well as the swing noise builds the tension along with only seeing the back of the boys face, this puts the audience in suspense to see his face and identify with him.
The build up of music then leads the audience into fixation on the boy, which makes his sudden turn of the head scary, this allows the audience to feel although the boy is looking straight at them and therefore evokes fear. The fact that this film comes out on the 6th day of the 6th month of the 6th year, allows the audience member to know that this will be a film about the devil as it is usually what is associated with the number '666'. The putting together of the digits at the end of the trailer again confirms this assumption and re installs their fear making them eager to go see it.

Dracula in film.

Mary Shelly's Frankenstien: Poster Analyisis

This poster is mostly black, symbolising death and fear. The white light shining down the middle highlights the image of a body in mid air, sinuating that that is Frankenstien as well as identifying what the audience is soon to be afraid of. The use of a shadow underneath the body also creates fear as it looks eary as well as it reminding the audience of their childhood when they were afraid of the dark and the shadows within them. The title of the film being under the main image also draws attention promoting the film. This is White and therefore catches the audiences eye instantly, this is simular to the credit block and the actors names as the top of the poster. All advertising appropriatly for the film.

The Others: Poster analysis.

The darkness to this poster is iconic in horror films as darkness and fear are usually associated as all scary things often come out of the dark. This is linked to the fear of the unknown. The light used in this poster is an old lantern contextualising this film to a period of time. The colour of the light has a yellow/orange glow to it again adding to the horror as it symbolises fire. The fearful look on Nicole Kidman's face also produces horror as she too is scared allowing the audience to prepare to be scared themselves. The tag line 'sooner or later they will find you' stimulates fear as it gives the audience an idea that they can't hide from what ever evil may be presented in this film. The white writing on top of the darkness draws attention to the title of the film, who is staring in it as well as the credits. This therefore promotes and advertises the film which is the soul purpose of the poster.

Things we found challenging during the production and editing of our horror trailer (BLEAK HILL LANE):

  • Consistancy. - We found this hard as we filmed over a number of different days, and were filming in someones house. This meant the we had to keep setting up the rooms in the way we wanted them and putting them back once we had finished. Due to the different schedules of the actors we were forced to set up the rooms on various different days which enforced the problem of consistancy. In order to insure that the rooms looked the same through out the trailer we took a fair amount of pictures and followed the details in the images every time we set up. Another problem we came across was costume, as we filmed on different days we had some actors that were needed on more then one occasion meaning that we needed them in the same clothes. We takled this problem again by taking pictures of all the actors after the first filming session and making sure that they looked the same on the other days of filming. Also ensuring that they brought the right clothing with them each time we filmed. If they were wearing a coat in one scene we made sure that it made logical sense to why they weren't wearing one in the next shot on the trailer. This sometimes meant shooting extra footage which may not have made it to the trailer itself.
  • Another problem we came across was the initial car scenes that we wanted to have. Originally we wanted to have an establishing shot of a car driving past and then shoot a conversation involving sex in the car, as it is well known that sex equals death in horror films. However we were faced with the problem that it was raining when we went to shoot this scene. This made it difficult of us to film as we needed to hold a umberella over the camera whislt filming meaning that in some shots the umberella peared in veiw. Another problem we had where the local people jogging, people would get into the shot making it un-usable. When filming the conversation in the car we found it difficult to work out where to position the camera, as placing the camera on the dash board at the front of the car made a camera angle that neither of the directors were happy with. This lead to us shooting the conversation through the car window. This scene did not make it into our horror trailer as when editing we decided that this scene looked too amiture and we were not completely happy with it. Another car scene that didnt make it was the car not starting, this was due to the car actually starting everytime we filmed it, as well as the change of light, we filmed this section at a different time to the rest so the day light was darker and the two clips didnt seem to link. Also we later noticed that we got the 'tikwando' in shot and therefore lost the sense of isolation that we originally wanted. Due to these things this scene was also cut.
  • The camera itself caused a few problems for us as its battery did not last as long as we would have liked it to, leading to us having to stop the filming, wait for it to charge and then continuing, by which time the actors may have had to leave.
  • We also came across some problems as we realised that some of the ideas we had written down on paper and on our storyboards didnt work quite like we thought and didnt seem as effective as we wanted to. This lead to us taking out some shots that we planned and adding in adittional ones that were not planned.
  •  It proved difficult for us to film the teddy bear scenes as each time we wanted to show the teddy dropping and therefore had to lower it manualy. This came to be a problem as we needed to try and not show the actors body whilst they were lowering it.
  • When editing we came across problems such as having too much of the same actor at one time, this had to therefore be changed with the order of the trailer. Also we had some problems with the original layout of the trailer as we had changed certain scenes whilst filming which lead to a different out come then we originally planned. Choosing what we wanted in the trailer and what we wasnt going to use also became difficult for us as we liked alot of the shots that we took however not all of them made sense when placed together.
  • The sound design of the trailer seemed challenging also as we originally wanted to put music box noise half way through the trailer, but when doing so we realised that our intentions weren't clear to an audience that didnt already know our inital idea. We then decided to put the music box sound on as soon as the flash back began and then play the same sound backwards after in order to show it had been distorted. however we were then faced with the problem of not having sound at the beginning half of the trailer. We therefore took out all of the sound and added the soundtrack to 'Dead Silence', which proved to work well with the trailer as a whole. Another problem we also had with the sound was the screams, some of the screams didn't sound as good as others which led to cutting the sound from some scenes and importing it to others. Also cutting out the swearing became a challenge as we still wanted to keep some of the audio on certain scenes, for example Faye's bussing sequence in the mirror and her 'What the f..' it proved difficult to cut the swear word yet keep the 'f' sound in order to give the intention of shock we wanted.
  • Some scenes we wanted to change the order to which seemed to prove difficult, for example we tried to have Faye turn around see that nothing was there, look in the mirror and the girl be standing there. However this went against our original idea when filming and due to this the camera angles didnt match up in order for us to change the order effectively. We therefore kept it as or initial sequence of her looking in the mirror, the girl appearing and then Faye turning and the girl being gone.
  • Another thing that challeneged us was making our cuts longer as we enjoyed razor blading our trailer in order to give it an edgy tough to it. This was the 'emo of editing' technique as our teacher liked to call it. This proved effective but also produced more problems for us when we wanted to slow a scene down and had to slow down every fragment of the scene in razor bladed cuts, as this slowed down our editing.
  • Through out the whole editing process we continuosly showed our trailer to other members of our media class as well as other teachers, students and staff, in order to give us an idea of how some one who didnt already know our intentions would react to our trailer. Each time we asked for critisism and then worked on the comments we got.

FINAL horror trailer. BLEAK HILL LANE.

((Insert Video!))
Things we changed are:
  • We added a green banner in order to give the horror trailer a rating and to make it seem more offitial.
  • We added the sound to 20th century fox.
  • We edited the first tone card to say 'Myth' instead of 'Story' to give the impression that this ghost story was an urban myth.
  • We took out a shot of the girls walking past the camera when initially entering the house as we wanted the music to kick in as soon as the character started walking up the stairs towards the nursery.
  • We changed the saturation on the Eye in order to make it more red, to make it more traditional horror.
  • We added more blue into some scenes in order to make the colours seem consistant.
  • We Increased the contrast on the grey footage of the little girl in order to add age to the footage and give the impression that this peice of footage shows the past.
  • We added the beginning part of the soundtrack back at the end in order to round of the horror trailer as a whole.

The Ring: Film Review and Poster Analysis

Film Review:

Title: The Ring
Directed by: Gore Verbinski
Year: 2002
Paradigmatic conventions:
Setting: America, Apartment, Cabin,
Character: Two teenage girls, Mother, Father and a son.
Villain: A dead girl.
Props: T.V, Hands, demonic powers.
Evokes fear: Having a deadline on life, knowing when you are going to die and not being able to pro-long your life.
Plot synopsis: Two teenage girls are having a sleep over, when one tells the other about a tape she watched with her boyfriend in a cabin in the forest seven days before and the story that goes with the tape; that seven days after viewing this tape the viewer is expected to die. Later on in the evening this prediction is shown to be true. The dead girls younger cousin Aiden is visibly affected by her death. The girls mother asks Aiden's mum Rachel to investigate the death of her daughter which leads Rachel to the cabin in the woods and leads to her watching the tape. After viewing the tape Rachel gets a phone call of a child's voice saying 'seven days'. With this all panic breaks out and crazy scenarios begin to take place. This soon leads to her son and her former lover to also watch the tape, and quickly their life time runs out. Can they break the curse and figure out the story behind the tape before their life ends.

Poster analysis:

The poster is mainly black to highlight the dark aspects of this film, the dark story behind the deaths about to take place. The white ring around the title 'The Ring' doesn't only draw attention to the title but also hints at the demonic girl seen later in the film that is trapped down a well. The font of the title is quite child like as it is a horror film concentrate on a young boy being haunted by a dead girl, this font highlights their youth. The tag line 'before you die, you see' this links to the plot of the film that once you watch the tape you are destined to die seven days later. All writing on the poster is white so that it contrasts the black background and attracts the viewers eye and attention.

Final destination Poster Analysis

The image is mainly black in order to connote fear and death. The skull adds to the image by suggesting that many characters are going to die in the duration of this movie. The shattered glass with the girls face on symbolises her life ending. This also relates nicely to the tag line 'Rest in peices', a play on words due to the horrific deaths about to be shown in this film. The tag line and the title of the film are both the same colour white to show continuity but also importance, these both stand out as they are the most vital parts of the poster, the parts which advertise the film and allow the public to know what the film is called. The date is in red which also stands out, but not as much as the title. This also signifies blood and adds to the promise of death within the movie.

SKELETON KEY Poster Analysis

This poster is effective due to the image inside the image. The image of the eye allows the audience to feel watched, and already inserts some fear into the viewer before they have seen the film. The image inside the eye is of a man sitting in a wheel chair, this suggests that this man has been watched, allowing the audience to already gather the interpretation that this man will be the main character in this horror film. The title 'The skeleton key' Is writing in not only a different font but also in a different colour, this enables the title to stand out and draw attention to the film, helping advertise and promote this horror movie.

DRAG ME TO HELL Poster Analyisis

The weather in this image is dull, full of stormy clouds and has a death feel to it due to its dark colour and black pigmentation. This contrasts with the flames at the bottom of the poster which enforces the idea of pain and links to the title 'Drag me to hell' as hell is often thought of as a place filled with fire at the earths centre. The main image is of a girl screaming which tells the audience that this is the main character in this film and that this character is being targeted by something. The hands holding her and pulling her down emphasises the 'Drag' part of the title, and tells the reader where this evil force is coming from (Hell). The white writing against this allows the title of the film to stand out and therefore promotes the film. As the title and the tag line are the only white features on this poster it draws attention to the film and catches the audience's eye.

Vanishing on 7th street - Trailer anaylisis and Film review.

This film links to the common fear of the darkness, it regurgitates the childhood fear of the shadows in the dark. And therefore feels very real to the audience making the film even scarier.

As the darkness spreads and the shadows draw closer there is only one thing they know for sure, that the light it their only hope. The only problem is, their losing more of it every minute.

Poster Analyisis

  • The image fading into the background highlights the first word of the title 'vanishing' and gives the audience a clear idea of what this film is going to be like.
  • The black background links with the idea of fear and death, not being able to see your attacker and focusing on mans primal fear, the dark, 'Fear lives in the dark'.
  • The white writing is used in order to draw your attention to the film title and information.
  • The image shows limited hints about the film in order to wet your appetite and give you the urge to go see the film in order to gain more knowledge of what it is about.
  • From the images facial expression you can see that this film is of the Horror genre as the person is screaming.

Saw 3D Trailer anaylisis and film review.

By linking a well known horror film and bringing it to life, by not only putting it in 3D but setting the film outside of the previous environments and into the comfort of day light in public places, it produces fear as the audience then begins to worry if anything like that should happen to them. The use of dark colours are classic for a horror movie as it symbolises evil as well as death.

Narrative time line:

Period of equilibrium
1.) Establishing shot of buildings
2.) People walking on the streets.
3.) Man in shop window
4.) People looking in shop window
5.) Man waking up

Moment of Disequilibrium
“I want to play a game”

Period of Disequilibrium
1.) Mans arm being sawed off
2.) Man stuck in a car
3.) People hanging over fans
4.) Some one falling onto spikes
5.) Series of 3D sharp objects flying at the audience.

Conflict: The Game master

Complication x3: There is no way out of the game without sacrifice, most people die during the game, and the Game master is now targeting people outside of the movie (3D)

Crisis: After watching the film SAW many times, the audience soon become the players. Will anyone come out of the cinema alive?

Film review:

Title: SAW 3D
Directed by: Kevin Greutert
Year: 2010
Paradigmatic conventions:
Setting: the city
Character: random members of the public
Villain: ‘The Game master'
Props: Saws, knifes, Machines (any killing weapon)
Evokes fear: A film you are used to seeing soon becomes more then a film, and there is no escape.
Plot synopsis: The same horrific deaths in the other saw movies continue into this one, but with new ideas and techniques in how to make people squirm the game master goes public. Locking people in the city and torturing them is his new idea of fun. In gripping 3D are you ready to ‘play a game’?

Poster Analysis:

The black background of the poster symbolises a loss of hope and life, therefore foreboding the deaths waiting to be seen in this film. The Bold white writing of 'SAW 3D' contrasts against the black background therefore drawing the audiences attention to the name of the film, advertising it more. The Red splatter over the white writing of the title is meant to be an image of blood splatter, confirming that this film comes under the "slasher" category of horror, promising the audience a lot of death, blood and gore. The image of the broken face symbolises the brokenness of the society in this film, how firm foundations can be broken and the fear of uncertainty.
