Vanishing on 7th street - Trailer anaylisis and Film review.

This film links to the common fear of the darkness, it regurgitates the childhood fear of the shadows in the dark. And therefore feels very real to the audience making the film even scarier.

Narrative time line:

Period of equilibrium
1.) Calm setting as the sun rises
2.) Man wakes up
3.) Brushes his teeth whilst
4.) Walks through the lobby
5.) Walks out reading his newspaper

Moment of Disequilibrium
1.) Steps on glasses, realises that everyone has vanished. (period of disequilibrium)
2.) Reveal of ‘The shadows’ (big moment of disequilibrium)

Period of Disequilibrium
1.) Lights turning off
2.) Shadows walking towards them
3.) Trying to survive
4.) Running out of light/ shadows playing tricks
5.) People being pulled into darkness by the shadows.
Conflict: Shadows
Complication x3: Deserted, Outnumbered, Running out of light.
Crisis: Darkness has taken over the world causing people to vanish and shadows to take their places. What do you do when darkness begins to take over light and there seems to be no way of survival?

Film Review:

Title: Vanishing on 7th street
Directed by: Brad Anderson
Year: 2010
Paradigmatic conventions:
Setting: the city
Character: random members of the public
Villain: ‘The shadows’
Props: darkness
Evokes fear: Not being able to see what is trying to kill you.
Plot synopsis: A Global black out causes a huge population to disappear leaving just their clothes and belongings behind. Whilst more people vanish so does day light, forcing a small group of people to come together and make camp in a small abandoned dimly lit bar. As the darkness spreads and the shadows draw closer there is only one thing they know for sure, that the light it their only hope. The only problem is, their losing more of it every minute.

Poster Analyisis

  • The image fading into the background highlights the first word of the title 'vanishing' and gives the audience a clear idea of what this film is going to be like.
  • The black background links with the idea of fear and death, not being able to see your attacker and focusing on mans primal fear, the dark, 'Fear lives in the dark'.
  • The white writing is used in order to draw your attention to the film title and information.
  • The image shows limited hints about the film in order to wet your appetite and give you the urge to go see the film in order to gain more knowledge of what it is about.
  • From the images facial expression you can see that this film is of the Horror genre as the person is screaming.

Saw 3D Trailer anaylisis and film review.

By linking a well known horror film and bringing it to life, by not only putting it in 3D but setting the film outside of the previous environments and into the comfort of day light in public places, it produces fear as the audience then begins to worry if anything like that should happen to them. The use of dark colours are classic for a horror movie as it symbolises evil as well as death.

Narrative time line:

Period of equilibrium
1.) Establishing shot of buildings
2.) People walking on the streets.
3.) Man in shop window
4.) People looking in shop window
5.) Man waking up

Moment of Disequilibrium
“I want to play a game”

Period of Disequilibrium
1.) Mans arm being sawed off
2.) Man stuck in a car
3.) People hanging over fans
4.) Some one falling onto spikes
5.) Series of 3D sharp objects flying at the audience.

Conflict: The Game master

Complication x3: There is no way out of the game without sacrifice, most people die during the game, and the Game master is now targeting people outside of the movie (3D)

Crisis: After watching the film SAW many times, the audience soon become the players. Will anyone come out of the cinema alive?

Film review:

Title: SAW 3D
Directed by: Kevin Greutert
Year: 2010
Paradigmatic conventions:
Setting: the city
Character: random members of the public
Villain: ‘The Game master'
Props: Saws, knifes, Machines (any killing weapon)
Evokes fear: A film you are used to seeing soon becomes more then a film, and there is no escape.
Plot synopsis: The same horrific deaths in the other saw movies continue into this one, but with new ideas and techniques in how to make people squirm the game master goes public. Locking people in the city and torturing them is his new idea of fun. In gripping 3D are you ready to ‘play a game’?

Poster Analysis:

The black background of the poster symbolises a loss of hope and life, therefore foreboding the deaths waiting to be seen in this film. The Bold white writing of 'SAW 3D' contrasts against the black background therefore drawing the audiences attention to the name of the film, advertising it more. The Red splatter over the white writing of the title is meant to be an image of blood splatter, confirming that this film comes under the "slasher" category of horror, promising the audience a lot of death, blood and gore. The image of the broken face symbolises the brokenness of the society in this film, how firm foundations can be broken and the fear of uncertainty.
